Our Book Buddies program gives children the chance to read their favorite books while cozying up to cats waiting for new homes. We invite children ages 6-12 to our main campus in Fairport to practice their reading skills in a positive, non-judgmental environment.* Our cats are great listeners!
Book Buddies also benefits the cats themselves: Our feline residents find the rhythmic sound of reading to be comforting and soothing, and more time spent with people means that they’ll become better socialized as they wait for adoption. Spaces are limited and parent/guardian supervision is required.
Cost: Donations are accepted.
Time: First and second Thursday of every month, 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., registration required
Ages: 6 to 12
If you need to cancel an existing reservation, please contact Lollypop Farm as soon as possible. Because spaces are limited, we want to ensure that a child on the waitlist can to take the open spot if yours can’t attend.
All sessions are full
*Tufts University has studied the effects of reading programs involving animals and has found benefits for children and pets. Some of their findings included:
- Pets often demonstrate a supportive atmosphere which encourages the reader. The good feelings associated with animals help children relax and enjoy the experience.
- Children on the Autism Spectrum demonstrated an increased use of language and improved social interactions when paired with an animal.
- Children showed “sustained focus and maintained a higher state of awareness, as well as improved attitudes toward school.”
Animals can “provide support and comfort to participants without judging them.”
