Who was Henry Bergh?
Henry Bergh, a diplomat appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, was on assignment in Russia when he witnessed a carriage driver beating his fallen horse. He was inspired to resign his post and return to New York where he devoted his energy to the prevention of cruelty to animals. On April 10, 1866, Henry Bergh was granted a charter by the New York State legislature for the formation of The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). His commitment ignited a movement in animal welfare. Agencies across the nation began to emerge to help end animal suffering. With this mission at heart, the Humane Society of Rochester and Monroe County for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals became the third SPCA in New York State. Today, several thousand independent humane groups exist to carry on his vision. As a Bergh Society member, you demonstrate your commitment to continuing this mission to ensure a safe community for all pets.
