Scout Programs

Scouts learn the roles, responsibilities, and training required of veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians. Scouts tour the Klingenstein Veterinary clinic and observe the clinic staff as they provide medical care to the animals at Lollypop Farm.

Scouts learn the history of dog domestication and the characteristics of major breed groups. They learn about responsible dog ownership, including house-training, obedience training, socialization, and care. Scouts tour the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic and learn about dogs’ medical needs and basic first aid.
Time: 2 hours
Prerequisites: Evidence of providing care for a dog for at least 2 months
Follow-up: Report of visit required to earn merit badge

Scouts learn about the relationships among the natural factors in an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, and other organisms. They create a field notebook and identify the required number of birds, mammals, fish, plants, and soil/rocks. Scouts construct a bird feeding station and record which birds use it for one month.

Follow-up: Completion of the field notebook is required

Scouts learn how to use and care for binoculars, create a field notebook, and identify at least 20 species of wild birds. Scouts construct a bird feeder to attract wild birds. Scouts will learn about birds’ different adaptations, the functions of their songs and calls, and the conservation status of birds.

Scouts learn about the characteristics and habitats of 10 reptiles and amphibians. Scouts learn the roles of reptiles and amphibians in their ecosystems and the differences between major groups of reptiles and amphibians. Scouts identify different species of reptiles and amphibians and discuss them within a group.
Time: 2.5 hours
Prerequisites: No prerequisites
Follow-up: Evidence of maintaining a reptile or amphibian for one month, OR studying a reptile or amphibian weekly for a period of 3 months, is required

Scouts learn the purposes of fish and wildlife management, the practices used by fish and wildlife professionals, and the problems they face. They construct and erect two bird feeders and regularly check them. Scouts observe and record at least 25 species of wildlife, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Scouts determine the age of five fish species from scale samples.

Scouts will learn that animals have the same needs and feelings as we do! We will learn how animals communicate with one another and how we can communicate with our pets. Scouts will tour Lollypop Farm to learn how the needs of different animals are met.

Scouts will learn the basics of pet care and the responsibilities that come with owning a pet. We will learn what our pets need to be happy, healthy, and safe. Scouts will create a budget for pet care and practice grooming techniques. We will tour Lollypop Farm and see in person how animals communicate with one another and with us.

Scouts will learn about wild animals and their habitats. We will explore what an adequate habitat requires for an animal to thrive and how we can help protect these environments. Scouts will create bird feeders that provide food and nesting materials for wild birds. We will tour Lollypop Farm and learn how our pets’ needs are met by their habitats.

Scouts will explore the connection between humans and animals and how we help each other to thrive. Scouts will learn about amazing animal heroes and the many ways that animals enrich our lives every day. We will tour Lollypop Farm and explore how rescued animals help their humans.

Scouts will learn to understand global animal issues and what they can do to help. We will explore a variety of problems animals face and the efforts to address them. We will tour Lollypop Farm and discuss the specific issues affecting shelter animals and how Lollypop Farm addresses them.
