Shakira’s story is one of expert veterinary care and community compassion.

New Technology
As a nonprofit, having the right tools can mean the difference between uncertainty and lifesaving clarity. That’s why receiving our new ultrasound machine feels nothing short of transformative. For an organization that relies on precision, compassion, and community trust, this technology enables us to provide every animal with the highest level of care. Having this new ultrasound system has been a significant help in point-of-care diagnostics.

Ultrasounds provide real-time information about soft tissue for conditions that x-rays may miss, and provide immediate diagnostics that would otherwise require sedation. Our Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic was really able to see the benefits of this new machine when treating a little kitten named Shakira. At only two months old, she came into the shelter with no mother or siblings, suffering from a prolapsed rectum caused by roundworms. It was because of this new machinery that our team was able to take a deeper look and provide a definitive diagnosis.

Shakira’s Journey
Her journey began when a Good Samaritan found her and her siblings after their mother was tragically hit by a car. While the kind rescuer worked to find homes for the other kittens, Shakira’s condition was urgent. She was suffering from a rectal prolapse, a painful and potentially serious condition in which part of the large intestine protrudes from the body. Further testing revealed that she also had roundworms, a common parasite in kittens that may have contributed to her condition.

The dedicated team at the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic quickly scheduled surgery to repair the prolapse and carefully monitored her recovery every step of the way. Thanks to the generosity of animal lovers like you, Shakira received the expert care she desperately needed. After fighting an uphill battle to get her appetite back post-surgery, Shakira was able to make a full recovery and is already living in her new, loving home.

We’re deeply grateful for the support that advances our ability to provide lifesaving care like this, and we feel incredibly fortunate to be equipped with tools that help us save more lives every day. Shakira’s story is a reminder that even the smallest creatures can face big challenges, but with your support, they can overcome them.
