They say every scar tells a story. If that’s true, Huxley has quite a few stories to tell.

Huxley was brought in after he was discovered tied to a pole. The 4-year-old mixed breed had healed wounds as well as new cuts and lacerations. Huxley had toes missing on one foot and infections on the other. The Lollypop Farm Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic staff also diagnosed Huxley with heartworm disease after a routine blood test.

Heartworm disease is transmitted to dogs by mosquitoes, whose bite transmits the larvae form of heartworm into a dog. Heartworm disease can be deadly, with the worms migrating to the heart, multiplying, and eventually causing immense strain on the heart muscle and surrounding blood vessels. Symptoms in dogs range from coughing to trouble breathing and heart failure, depending on how long the dog has been infected and the number of worms in their system.

Huxley had a long road to recovery, but the staff at Lollypop Farm were there to help. Huxley was started on heartworm treatment, called immiticide injections, to kill adult heartworms. He was also given a medication called HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel), which would prevent the maturation of other worms in his system. During his treatment, the staff at Lollypop Farm had to limit his activity and stress, as it could be dangerous for his heart while getting treatments.

Having completed his treatments, Huxley loves to run and play in his new home. “I’m so happy that I was able to adopt him and take care of him,” Huxley’s owner Josh states. “It took him a little bit to get adjusted to being in the house, but now he is doing great. He loves to go on runs and especially loves car rides.”

Heartworm disease is preventable with medications like HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel). Not only is the cost of regular heartworm medication more cost-effective, but is better for your pet’s well-being. HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) also prevents intestinal parasites such as hookworms that can wreak havoc on your pet’s gastrointestinal system.

Huxley’s scars and heart are healing, thanks to his new owner and the support of partners like Boehringer Ingelheim. Thank you to Boehringer Ingelheim for supplying HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel), Nexgard, and Frontline to Lollypop Farm pets in need.

Heart-to-Heart with Lollypop Farm

Lollypop Farm has partnered with Boehringer Ingelheim, makers of HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) for an exciting life-saving adoption program for dogs like Huxley. Some dogs that come to Lollypop Farm are diagnosed in our veterinary clinic with a life-threatening condition called heartworm disease. This serious disease is difficult and costly to treat. The cost of treatment for these pets, and others like them, have been paid for thanks to the generosity of Boehringer Ingelheim. Dogs treated for heartworm at Lollypop Farm will also have their adoption fee waived and will be going home with a year’s supply of a heartworm preventative called HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) to help keep them protected in their new home.
